Villa College hosts Teaching and Learning Symposium 2026
2 min read

The Faculty of Educational Studies at Villa College convened educators, academics, and education professionals for the Teaching and Learning Symposium 2026 on Saturday, 24 October, establishing a vital forum to address the structural development of the teaching profession. The proceedings were guided by an overarching institutional premise: the quality and resilience of educational systems depend directly on how effectively teachers are recognised, supported, and equipped. Abdul Sattar Gasim, Dean of the Faculty of Educational Studies, opened the symposium, setting the stage for Chief Guest Dr Abdul Latheef Mohamed, Minister of State for Education, Higher Education and Skills Development. Delivering his keynote address, entitled "Empowering Teachers to Shape the Future of Learning", Dr Mohamed established a critical paradigm shift by positioning teachers as strategic architects of educational futures rather than passive implementers of top-down policy.

To bridge systemic strategy with classroom execution, research sessions across the morning and afternoon grounded theoretical discussions in rigorous empirical evidence. This analytical focus demonstrated that good intentions alone cannot enhance pedagogical quality; measurable improvement requires structured inquiry and reflective practice. Expanding on this theme, Dr Ruchi Kumar, Assistant Professor at the Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai, delivered the afternoon keynote address, "Seeing Mathematics Differently: Beyond Numbers, Formulas and Procedures". Drawing from over twenty years of experience across curriculum reform, geometric reasoning, and technology-enhanced learning in under-resourced environments, Dr Kumar contrasted the limitations of procedural memorisation with the intellectual value of teaching mathematics as a structured way of reasoning about the world. Her work highlighted how sustainable educational reform requires an active, evidence-based alignment between academic research, institutional policy, and daily classroom reality.

The symposium also addressed the human and structural elements necessary for institutional retention and professional longevity. During the panel discussion, "Standing with Teachers: Professional Status, Voice and Wellbeing", educators examined the multifaceted realities of the profession. Moderated by Ahmed Athoof Mohamed, a current student in the Bachelor of Teaching in Chemistry and Biology programme, the session featured insights from four alumni: Bishara Adam, a graduate of the Bachelor of Education in Teaching English as a Second Language; Fathimath Diyana Adil, who holds a Master of Arts in Education; and Hawwa Suma Ahmed and Nafla Ali Firag, both graduates of the Masters of Education in Teaching. The collaborative dialogue between current students and established alumni illustrated that professional development is an iterative, continuous cycle rather than a terminal qualification.

Bringing the symposium to a formal close, Fathimath Saeed reinforced the practical implications for school administrators and education policymakers. Meaningful investment in educators requires an integrated strategy: institutions must move beyond transactional, one-off training sessions and instead cultivate a culture that respects professional status, incorporates teacher perspectives into strategic governance, and actively safeguards workplace wellbeing. Through these focused academic initiatives, Villa College continues to lead evidence-based dialogue and build sustainable capacity across the educational landscape of the Maldives.
