Panel Discussion Explores Shariah and Sustainability

The panel discussion on "Shariah and Sustainability: Islamic Principles for Environmental Stewardship" hosted by the Faculty of Shariah and Law (FSL) at Villa College on March 20, 2025, effectively addressed key global environmental issues through the lens of Islamic teachings. The session emphasized the role of Shariah-based principles in promoting sustainability and conservation, aligning closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The discussions highlighted the ethical and legal responsibilities within Islam to preserve natural resources, which supports SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Islamic principles advocate for moderation, avoidance of wastefulness, and the sustainable use of resources, reinforcing the global need for responsible consumption and sustainable production practices.

Further, the conversation on climate challenges underscored the importance of taking proactive measures to combat environmental harm, thereby contributing to SDG 13: Climate Action. By integrating Islamic perspectives on environmental stewardship, the panel reinforced the significance of faith-based guidance in tackling issues like climate change, waste management, and sustainable development.

The protection of water bodies and other vital natural resources, as discussed during the panel, directly aligns with SDG 14: Life Below Water, particularly through the Shariah principle of safeguarding water and aquatic ecosystems. Moreover, the session's focus on preserving ecosystems and biodiversity resonated with the objectives of SDG 15: Life on Land, highlighting the Islamic duty to maintain the balance of nature and protect terrestrial habitats for future generations.

By integrating faith and environmental responsibility, the panel discussion reaffirmed Villa College's commitment to fostering academic discourse on sustainability, underscoring the vital connection between religious teachings and global sustainability efforts.
