Important things every Marketing student needs to be aware of

All of us are proud to have a degree, especially in Marketing. However, most current and graduating students aren’t prepared for the “real” world. It is important to be aware and mindful of things outside your textbooks.

Here are 5 important things every Marketing student should have in mind.

1. Your classroom experience does not portray a real job

You can simulate real life scenarios as much as you want, but you won’t be able to learn how to make decisions in a limited timeframe unless you are managing a real business, handling real money and undertaking actual responsibilities. It is even tougher that you cannot really practice doing this. As every scenario and situation will be different in the real world. You have actually be there and do it a few times to learn. Make use of the internship opportunities to prepare yourself.

2. Having an internship on your CV isn’t going to guarantee a job

Always remember that just having an internship from a huge firm isn’t going to guarantee you a job. Maybe it will get you through the door to an interview, but it is what you have done and achieved at the place that really counts. Also, remember to prepare for your interviews!

3. Marketing IS fast paced and ISN’T about pretty posts

Marketing is almost entirely dependent on timing. You could be one second early and it could bring a huge difference. Chances are that you won’t be finding solutions to problems in a limited time in ancient textbooks either. So learn how to think on your feet to become great at marketing. On the other hand, marketing is NOT just pretty posts. An effective marketing campaign focuses more on creating content that benefits your target audience. Try to answer their potential questions correctly and your content will naturally become viral and effective.

4. Social media management

Social media is still considered somewhat recent. It isn’t taught it in most business schools, although some programmes are emerging. The ability to manage social media platforms are crucial in today’s market. Social media platforms can be used in different ways to enhance the marketing of your workplace. If you do not have prior experience, even the management of your own social media accounts can convince your potential employers.

5. Marketing needs statistics!

Are you afraid of numbers? Do you avoid taking statistics or analysis classes? Well, you shouldn’t do that. Marketing depends on statistics. You need to be able to read graphs, spreadsheets and charts to make proper calculations and evaluate what they mean. If not, you will be coming up with decisions and ideas for problems that you do not have a full insight to. This could lead to bad consequences for your business. So pay attention in your statistics class!
