Accelerating Action, Empowering Women through Legal Education: Celebrating International Women's Day 2025

As we celebrate International Women's Day 2025, the Faculty of Shariah and Law at Villa College proudly joins the global community in recognising the invaluable contributions of women to society. This year's theme, " Accelerating Action," resonates deeply with our faculty’s(and institution's) commitment to fostering a culture of equality, justice, and human rights.

The Struggle for Women's Rights

Throughout history, women have faced numerous challenges and obstacles in their pursuit of social equity and justice. From the moment Prophet Muhammad-peace be on him- protected the rights of women to life (prohibiting female infanticide) and promoting women’s right to education, to inheritance and to dignity all through the suffragette movement to the present day, there have been continued fight for women’s rights, often in the face of overwhelming opposition. Despite these challenges, women have made significant strides in various fields, including law, politics, education, and healthcare.

Women in Law

The legal profession has traditionally been male-dominated, but women have made significant inroads in recent years. Today, women make up a substantial proportion of law students and practitioners, bringing unique perspectives and experiences to the field. At the Faculty of Shariah and Law , majority of our students are women who are passionate about legal studies and social equity. In our research engagements, for example in marine and environmental law, there has been a focus on promoting the rights of women. However, we recognise that women still face challenges in the legal profession and we are committed to leverage the knowledge of law to tackle these challenges.

Empowering Women through Education

Education is a critical factor in empowering women. The Faculty of Shariah and Law at Villa College is committed to providing a supportive and inclusive learning environment that encourages women to pursue careers in law. Our faculty members are dedicated to mentoring and guiding female students, helping them to develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the legal profession.

Women's Rights in the Maldives

The Maldives has made significant progress in promoting women's rights in recent years. The government has implemented various initiatives aimed at empowering women, including the establishment of the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services. However, challenges remain, including the persistence of gender-based violence.

The Role of Men

Men have a critical role to play in promoting gender equality and empowering women. By recognising and challenging patriarchal attitudes and behaviors, men can help to create a more inclusive and equitable society. The Faculty of Shariah and Law encourages men to join us in celebrating International Women's Day 2025 and make a commitment to further contribute to women empowerment.

Conclusion

As we celebrate International Women's Day 2025, the Faculty of Shariah and Law at Villa College reaffirms its commitment to promoting gender equity and empowering women. We recognise the significant contributions that women have made to society and pledge to continue working towards a more inclusive and equitable world. By empowering women, we empower humanity, and we look forward to a brighter future for all.
