DhivehiAI is an open-source community aiming to advance and recognize efforts in technological innovations around the Dhivehi Language. A session about “HOW TO TRAIN A SPEECH RECOGNITION MODEL '' was conducted for Computer Science and Foundation in IT students at Villa College in collaboration with DhivehiAI.
The students learnt about the Google Colaboratory; a free Jupyter notebook environment that requires no setup and runs entirely in the cloud. With Colaboratory students can write and execute code, save, and share their analyses, and access powerful computing resources. Jupyter notebook is not a static page, but an interactive environment that lets the students write and execute code in Python and other languages.
The students explored the concepts of Machine Learning, Neural Networks and Phonetics. As most of the BSc Computer Science year 1 students participated in this session, learning about the commonly used machine learning algorithms, theory and implementation of these algorithms in R and python gave them an insight of the whole learning outcome of the module Introduction to Artificial Intelligence.
Learning to build a simple digital assistant that can recognize and accept simple commands along with how text to speech and speech to text technologies respond to us was a fun learning experience for them.
An insightful session for the students as it is reflected in the contents studied in Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Module in the Computer Science program. Training the model was the most exciting part of the session.
The students who participated in the session, got the opportunity to contribute and validate voice in the common voice model.

Villa College Computer Science Faculty of Engineering and Technology, and Foundation IT Centre for Foundation Studies, became a contributor and helped them improve the tech around Dhivehi for everyone!
