UWE – VC Graduation 2019

The UWE – VC Graduation 2019 was held on 16th November 2019, Saturday in Dharubaaruge.

A total of 345 students graduated from undergraduate and postgraduate programmes from the University of the West of England. Addressing the gathering in the welcoming remarks, Rector of Villa College, Dr. Ahmed Anwar highlighted that the College is constantly reviewing processes to ensure that the graduates are ready to meet the challenges they will face in the real world. The Vice-Chancellor of UWE Bristol, Professor Steve West and Associate Dean - Strategic Partnerships, Dr. Fiona Jordan were also in attendance for this auspicious occasion. Vice-Chancellor of UWE Bristol, Professor Steve West advised the graduates to believe in their abilities, to be wise and using their skills and knowledge to make the world a better place than before, in his welcoming remarks.

After the conferment of degrees, graduates who achieved the Villa College Book Prize, the College Medal and Qasim Ibrahim Award for Excellence were given certificates and prizes. The Villa College Book Prize was awarded to 35 students from 10 different programmes. Certificates were awarded to the winners by the Rector of Villa College, Dr. Ahmed Anwar.

From this year onwards, the prize attached with the College Medal will be sponsored by industry leaders and professional bodies. Founder of Villa College, Honourable Dr. Qasim Ibrahim emphasized on the importance for the graduates, of using the knowledge acquired from Villa College to improve and bring further growth to the country, in his address to the participants of the ceremony. The ceremony was concluded by a speech from a graduate. The speech was delivered by the recipient of the Qasim Ibrahim Award for Excellence from MSc Information Technology, Mr. Hassan Mohamed.

3 new programmes launched for the upcoming Jan 2020 intake

Villa College has launched 3 new programmes for the upcoming January 2020 intake.

The new courses launched in the upcoming intake are the MSc Nursing (International), Bachelor of Psychology and Certificate Level 4 in Creative Arts and Design.  

MSc Nursing (International) was launched by the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Shah Abdulla Mahir. The Bachelor of Psychology programme was launched by the Hinnavaru Constituency MP, Ms. Aminath Jeehan Mahmood. Finally, the Certificate 4 in Creative Arts & Design programme was launched by the Permament Secretary of the Ministry of Planning and Infrastructure, Ms. Zeeniya Ahmed Hameed. 

The new intake offers the opportunity to join 97 different courses from Certificate level 1 to Master’s Degree programmes in different fields, including Information Technology, Computer Science, Teaching, Education, Sharia, Law, Islam, Business Management, Human Resource Management, Accounting and Finance, Banking and Finance, Marketing, Economics, Research, Pharmacy, Psychology, Public Health, Nursing, Marine Studies and Water Sports.

Among these, there are 12 Master’s programmes, 5 Postgraduate Diploma/Certificate programmes, 21 Degree programmes, 17 Diploma programmes, 14 Certificate level 4 (Degree Foundation) programmes, 12 Certificate level 3 programmes, 2 Certificate level 2 programmes and 1 Certificate level 1 programme, as well as 8 programmes in Marine Studies. In addition, ACCA Knowledge level, Skill level and Professional level is also offered in the upcoming January 2020 intake.

In the programmes that were launched, Bachelor of Psychology and C4 in Creative Arts & Design is the College’s own programmes, while MSc Nursing (International) is from University of the West of England, a prestigious university of the UK.

Application deadline for the upcoming January 2020 intake is 26th December 2019, with studies set to commence within two weeks of the month of January.

Villa College signs an agreement with Addu City Council to develop a Higher Education Institute

Villa College has signed an agreement with the Addu City Council to acquire land from Hithadhoo, Addu City.

The agreement was signed upon winning the bid proposal as submitted by the College, on 21st October 2019, in Addu City by the Addu City Council Mayor, Mr. Abdulla Sadig and the Vice Rector of Villa College, Dr. Ali Najeeb.

Addu City Council had opened for bid proposal 29th April 2019, to develop a Higher Education Institute in line with the Addu Development Plan and its target to be the "The Education City of Maldives".

Villa College has already been providing quality Higher Education opportunities for Addu City with a campus in Hithadhoo. The new campus shall enable the College to expand its operation in the region.

Villa College is now open for applications for the January 2020 Intake.

The new intake offers the opportunity to join 97 different courses from Certificate level 1 to Master’s Degree programmes in different fields, including Information Technology, Computer Science, Teaching, Education, Sharia, Law, Islam, Business Management, Human Resource Management, Accounting and Finance, Banking and Finance, Marketing, Economics, Research, Pharmacy, Psychology, Public Health, Nursing, Marine Studies and Water Sports.

Among these, there are 12 Master’s programmes, 5 Postgraduate Diploma/Certificate programmes, 21 Degree programmes, 17 Diploma programmes, 14 Certificate level 4 (Degree Foundation) programmes, 12 Certificate level 3 programmes, 2 Certificate level 2 programmes and 1 Certificate level 1 programme, as well as 8 programmes in Marine Studies. Besides the opportunities to study at the QI campus in Male’, the same opportunities are available at all the Villa College campuses around the country.

Application deadline for the upcoming January 2020 intake is 26th December 2019, with studies set to commence within two weeks of the month of January.

Students will have the option to make their payments easily in monthly instalments throughout their programme. In addition, the students have the opportunity to study all the Bachelor’s Degree Programs offered in Villa College, through the Free First Degree Scheme by the government.

Happy Teacher’s Day 2019!

Teacher’s Day was celebrated in Villa College on 2nd October 2019. In a joint effort by the Villa College Staff Club and the HR Department, a ceremony was held on the occasion. Addressing our teachers in this ceremony, our Rector, Dr. Ahmed Anwar praised the effort the teachers put into delivering their best to the students. Dr. Anwar stressed the importance of celebrating such a day in order to mark the hard work and dedication of teachers around the globe.

Tokens of appreciation were given to all the full-time academic staff of Villa College in this ceremony, followed by the cutting of the Teacher’s Day cake. The ceremony was then capped off with refreshments and some wonderful performances by the Villa International High School students for the VC academic staff.

Teacher’s Day is being celebrated throughout the country this week, with various activities being held on this delightful occasion.

A Customer Service training was conducted for the Villa College staff by Mr. Masood Ali on 26th September 2019. This training included various customer service techniques and practices. Our staff were engaged in a lively session where they identified numerous areas, in which the techniques and practices discussed in the session, that can be applied in the workplace.

Highlights of our 3rd Staff Meeting of 2019

Our 3rd Staff Meeting of 2019 was held on 17Th September 2019. As per usual, the first item on the agenda was the Staff Café Talk. Dr. Ali Fawaz Shareef delivered a motivational speech on the topic “Develop your brand” in this meeting’s edition of the Staff Café Talk.

Afterwards, the staff who joined after the previous staff meeting was introduced, giving each new staff an opportunity to introduce themselves. This was followed by a presentation by the Marketing department regarding the new and upcoming programmes in Villa College. The Assessment Policy was then shared by Mr. Moosa Mohamed followed by a presentation on Learning Support by Mr. Ahmed Yasir. Certificates were also given to the Employees of the Month from January 2019 to July 2019, after which the Staff Newsletter Issue: Volume 04 No. 01 was released by our Vice Rector, Dr. Ali Najeeb. Appointment letters were given to the promoted staff in Center for Postgraduate Studies (CPS), Center for Open and Distance Learning (CODL) and Faculty of Educational Studies (FES) and also to the newly elected members of the Villa College Staff Club (VCSC) Executive Committee.

Certificates and gifts were given to the winners of the Bookmark Competition organized by the Villa College Library and to the users who borrowed the most items from the library. It was followed by a presentation by the VCSC President, Ms. Hidaya Mohamed Zahir, regarding the planned activities and the Anniversary plan. Ms. Selina Mohamed from the Registration department, gave a presentation on the tasks for the upcoming UWE Graduation 2019.

Our Rector, Dr. Ahmed Anwar delivered a passionate speech regarding the upcoming UWE Graduation. Dr. Anwar stressed the importance of teamwork and giving 100% for this event.

Villa College Gan Campus officially inaugurated

Villa College Gan Campus has been officially inaugurated on Monday, 29th July 2019. The campus was officially inaugurated in an auspicious ceremony by the Rector of Villa College, Dr. Ahmed Anwar. Rector, Dr. Ahmed Anwar expressed his hope that the students in Laamu Atoll will make ample use of this opportunity to continue their higher studies in their home atoll, in his address. Moreover, the manager of the Villa College Gan Campus, Mr. Thoha Abubakur stressed the importance of students making use this opportunity to study from different fields while staying in their islands or atoll. Villa College Gan Campus is already home to some VC programmes of different fields and Mr. Thoha indicated that he hopes the students will make full use of this prospect. With the official inauguration of the Villa College Gan Campus, there are 7 Campuses and 16 Learning Centres throughout the atolls in Maldives.

ICSRI 2019 comes to an end

The 4th International Conference for Social Research and Innovation, ICSRI 2019 has ended. 

The closing keynote address was given by Dr. Arvind Mathur, WHO Representative to the Republic of Maldives on the topic "Taking the bull by the horn: #BeatNCDs". Dr. Arvind Manthur stressed the importance of facing challenges head on and achieving your targets in an engaging address. 

Certificates were given to the participants, moderators and evaluators. Moreover, the immense contributions of the endorsers, sponsors and the partners were commended by the awarding of certificates. Furthermore, certificates were given to the Best Papers of ICSRI 2019.

Dr. Ahmed Ali Didi addressed the gathering on behalf of the Evaluation Panel. Dr. Ahmed Shahd, Dean of Research, Institute of Research and Innovation delivered a passionate closing remarks, stating the importance, quality and academic excellence displayed through the conference.

The conference was held on two days, 17th and 18th July 2019, in the Villa College, QI Campus.

International Conference for Social Research & Innovation (ICSRI) 2019 begins

The 4th International Conference for Social Research and Innovation, ICSRI 2019 has begun. This years’ conference was inaugurated with the opening ceremony held today in the Villa College Hall.

The Rector of Villa College, Dr. Ahmed Anwar stressed the importance of research and how research can help to initiate and drive further inquiry and creative solutions, in his welcoming remarks.

2 keynote speakers, Minister of Environment, Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Seychelles, Dr. Justin Davis Valentin delivered their keynote speeches in the ceremony. Minister of Environment, Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan focused his keynote address on environmental challenges faced by island nations like the Maldives and ways to overcome them. Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Seychelles focused his address on the topic “Making educational reforms in small systems relevant for the implementers: A case study from Seychelles”.

The International Journal for Social Research and Innovation (IJSRI) Vol 3, Issue 1 and the "Qualitative Research Handbook" authored by the Dean Research, Institute of Research and Innovation, Dr. Ahmed Shahid was released by our Rector, Dr. Ahmed Anwar in this ceremony as well.

VC meets with JCM

Villa College Executives met with a delegation from Joint-Credits Mechanism (JCM) on 11th July 2019, Thursday. The meeting was held to commemorate the successful completion of the installation of solar panels and its operations in the QI Campus of Villa College. Moreover, further ways for collaboration between VC and JCM were discussed in this meeting.

It is a historical day for Villa College, as we received credits from JCM for the completion of the sustainable energy project which was collaborated by JCM. Villa College is the first Maldivian institution to do so as well. One of the main goals of Villa College is sustainability. VC took a huge leap towards attaining this goal by using solar energy in the operation of the entire QI Campus. With immense help from JCM, Villa College is proudly self-sufficient in terms of electricity.

The completion of this project is also a huge step forward in the project of Villa College going green. It is estimated that 216 tCO2 is reduced per year, through the 186 KwH PV Solar System, which is installed in the college. As per JCM, Villa College has avoided approximately 190 Tonnes of Carbon dioxide until 22 February 2019. VC also negotiated with STELCO and became the first in the country to conclude a successful net metering agreement to benefit from solar power use.

VC Executives visit Malaysia

Villa College Executive delegation visited Kuala Lampur, Malaysia between 25th to 29th June 2019. The delegation consisted of Vice Rector, Dr. Ali Najeeb, Deputy Vice Rector, Dr. Mohamed Adil and Deputy Vice rector, Abdul Munnim Mohamed Manik.

The delegation met with the Open University Malaysia (OUM) executives and discussed about the OUM learning management system and their virtual system. Moreover, the delegation visited the Centre for Instructional Design and observed how the curriculum and materials are produced.

The Villa College Executive delegation also met with Professor Ramly and his team, who presented how planning and budgeting takes place in OUM, while also presenting the key aspects of MIS. Furthermore, discussions were held with the Vice Chancellor and the Academic Advisor of Meritus University produced a range of issues including collaborative arrangements to be made in different disciplines and business areas. The VC delegation also met with the Vice Chancellor of Manipal International University.

Campus Managers Forum 2019 commences

The 3rd Campus Managers Forum commenced today. This forum is set to go on for 3 days, in the QI Campus. This forum is held annually, discussing different aspects of quality assurance and issues in operation of all campuses of Villa College. This forum is a focal point for discussions between campus managers, faculties and senior management of the college regarding different issues campuses face in their operations.

The Campus Managers Forum has proven to be fruitful in the previous events, as a vast majority of the discussed points being implemented further. This year’s edition promises to be even more prolific with the newest campuses also joining for this forum.

Graduation of Discover Hospitality Programme 2019

Graduation ceremony for the Discover Hospitality programme was held on 27th June 2019, Thursday. The ceremony was held in Hotel Jen. Rector of Villa College, Dr. Ahmed Anwar addressed the attendees and mentioned that Villa College always gives a special importance to these skill-based prorgammes and aims to provide more such opportunities for interested candidates. Moreover, the Chief guest of this auspicious occasion, the Vice President of Maldives, Mr. Faisal Naseem stressed the importance of these programmes for our country.

Discover Hospitality is a programme inaugurated by the Universal Foundation as a part of their Corporate Social Responsibility. This programme aims for the development and provision of opportunities for candidates interested in the field of tourism and hospitality. While 15 students and 22 students completed this programme in 2017 and 2018 respectively, 34 students have been enrolled for 2019. This shows the increasing support for this programme throughout the years.

Villa College signs a MoU with ADK Hospital

This MoU was signed between Villa College and ADK Hospital who agreed to create a platform to provide clinical education to the Villa College students enrolled in Nursing and health related programmes.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Ahmed Anwar, Rector of Villa College and Mr. Ahmed Afaal, Managing Director of ADK Company Pvt. Ltd.

This agreement will create opportunities for students of Villa College to gain further knowledge and valuable experience in their respective fields.

It also covers the roles and responsibilities of both parties that will form the basis of any joint activities that are to be undertaken as part of this collaboration.

OUM - VC Convocation 2019!

The Open University Malaysia (OUM) and Villa College (VC) Convocation 2019 was held on 20th April 2019. This was the last convocation for the OUM students. The event was held in the Villa College QI Campus.

The ceremony was held in three separate sessions where first of which was the OUM Convocation, followed by two sessions of the VC Convocation Ceremony. The OUM Convocation Ceremony was attended by the Vice Chancellor of the Open University Malaysia, Prof Dato’ Dr. Mansor Fadzil. He addressed the graduates as well, highlighting that there are more than 1800 alumni students of OUM from the Maldives.

Vice Rector of Villa College, Dr. Ali Najeeb welcomed the graduates in the VC Convocation sessions, emphasizing on the fact that 30% of the graduates were from Villa College campuses and learning centers from all over the country. Moreover, Dr. Najeeb highlighted that 51% of the graduates are women, thus shows the gender equal nature of opportunities in Villa College.

Rector of Villa College, Dr. Ahmed Anwar conferred the VC Convocation 2019.

77 students graduated from the OUM Convocation, while 232 students graduated from the VC Convocation.

The latest group of students from our campuses across the nation stepped out as

professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills to handle the different working

conditions in diverse working environments.

This was an event eagerly anticipated by all students and staff of Villa College.

Villa College holds 1st Multicultural night of 2019

Multicultural Night is one of the assessment tasks in English Proficiency One module. This event provides students with the opportunity to learn about various aspects of different cultures. The main aim of this event is to enhance research and presentations skills amongst students. 

 

This years' event was held on 11th April 2019, Thursday. During the module the students were grouped and given a country to represent. For the event, students designed a stall representing their country and were dressed traditionally. They also presented other features of the culture through traditional food, dances, songs, arts and many activities that represent the uniqueness of various cultures.

 

As one the most exciting academic events of the semester, this event encourages students to learn beyond the four walls of the classroom and facilitates students to hone soft skills such as communication, leadership and teamwork.

 

It is noteworthy to highlight that, there were a total of 18 stalls in this semester presented by 188 students from QI and Hulhumale' campus.

Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology endorses the “International Conference for Research & Innovation” – ICSRI 2019 by Villa College.

Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology endorses the ICSRI 2019 by the Institute of Research and Innovation (IRI) of Villa College. The endorsement ceremony was held in the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology on 11th April 2019.

The conference is now open for applications.

This is the 4th ICSRI by Villa College. This years’ conference is set to be held between 17-18 July 2019. The main theme of this years’ conference is “Transformative thinking: Leap to the future”.

The areas of paper submission in this years’ conference are, Business Management, Finance, Corporate Governance, Psychology, Education, Health, Nursing, Social work, Religion, Arts, Politics, Policy, Law, Governance, Environment, Technology, Language, Media and Communication.

The conference is set to have panel discussions of 6 main areas. They include, Research & Education, Business & Economy, Technology, Health, Environment & Sustainability and Democracy.

For candidates who are interested in submitting papers or posters the abstract submission deadline is 25th April 2019. Moreover, registration for the conference will be open from 13th June 2019 to 4th July 2019. FBM conducted an 'Ask the Expert' External HR professionals panel Q & A session

FBM conducted an 'Ask the Expert' External HR professionals panel Q & A session for students studying Management Skills module in BA (Hons) Business Management, BA (Hons) Business & Human Resource Management and BA (Hons) Business Management with Marketing courses. 

The experts for the session were Hussain Suaz and Asiyath Mohamed from the Bank of Maldives.

The aim of the module is to provide the students with an opportunity to understand and practice some of the skills that are necessary for effectively managing people in the workplace for future line managers and HR professionals. In particular, the module focuses on interviewing, reviewing performance, conducting negotiations and delivery of training.  The skills workshops are also designed to help them to learn and develop the skills, which will assist them in the applications for placements and graduate jobs and in managing and developing their own career. The module is organised thematically with each week’s teaching contributing to the understanding of a fundamental management skill.  The combination of preparation sessions containing the relevant theory and practical sessions involving role-plays, will ensure that our students get the opportunity to apply and practice the relevant skills and are made aware of the linkages from theory to ‘real-life’ application. The workshop sessions give them an opportunity to present their learned skills along with a great scope to enhance via received feedback.

First Staff Meeting of 2019

 

The first staff meeting of 2019 was held on 06th March 2019 in the college hall.

The meeting was attended by all VC staff and some guests. One of the most standout items was the speech by the Principal of Ghiyasuddin International School, Mr. Thoha Saleem on the topic “Character: The ultimate secret to success”. It was an engaging and inspirational speech which was enjoyed by the staff.

The meeting also saw the introduction of new staff. The tradition of the introduction of all the new staff continued as 20 new staff members introduced themselves.

Villa College achieved the global pass rate in the December 2018 ACCA examinations. Hence, a letter of appreciation was awarded to 2 ACCA lecturers, Mohamed Haleem and Ahmed Salim, for their contributions in this great achievement.

The announcement of the winners of the International Mother Tongue Day 2019 competition held between 21st February to 28th February 2019 was also made in the staff meeting. Winners from 4 categories were announced, and were awarded prizes accordingly.

The most applauded item in the agenda was the distribution of certificates to the Villa College men’s and women’s futsal teams. Notably, the women’s team dispatched VSTC by a large goal difference in the final of the tournament to win the ultimate prize, which was displayed in the hall throughout the meeting. Congratulations, VC Women’s futsal team!

Moreover, the staff newsletter (issue number 05) was released by the Vice Rector, Dr. Ali Najeeb. The newsletter has now been rebranded as Villa College Bits and Bytes. In addition, the Villa College mascot was introduced for the first time, and feedback on what changes needed to be made to the proposed version was given. This was followed by the presentation of the new programmes of the college and the sharing of new policies.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the speech by the Rector, Dr. Ahmed Anwar. He stressed the importance of team work and doing one’s best in everything. His speech was aimed exclusively at the upcoming convocation: the Rector emphasized the importance of giving everything everyone has to offer in order to make it a successful event.

Every staff meeting is an important step towards cohesive interaction among the staff. It can shape the corporate ethos and lead to ultimate success.

Champions of the SAS Invitational Futsal Tournament 2019!

Villa College women’s team won the SAS Invitational Futsal Tournament 2019.

The tournament was held from 1st March to 5th March 2019. Villa College participated in the men’s and women’s category, winning the latter in a scintillating final match.

The VC Men’s team faced off in a tough group and unfortunately lost both the group matches despite some brilliant performances from the players.

The women’s team had other ideas. Winning the first match 3-2 against V-Media cemented their place in the final. Next up was their final group match against fellow finalists Villa Shipping and Trading Company. The match ended in a 1-1 draw poising the final match nicely as both teams had equal chances of winning it. The VC Women’s team however, had too much in the locker for the opposition as they crushed VSTC in the final, winning 5-0 in a memorable night for Villa College.

SAS Invitational Futsal Tournament 2019 was held between the staff of different companies and institutions of the Villa group.

Villa College is participating in the 4th Maldives International Education & Career Expo. The expo is set to be held from 28th February to 2nd March 2019. MIECE 2019 includes 20 colleges, universities and educational institutions providing an opportunity to meet and discuss various career opportunities.

Congratulations to our staff moving up the ladder!

Promotions were given to some of our staff on 17th September 2019 in our 3rd staff meeting of 2019. Department heads were selected for the newly established Center for Postgraduate Studies (CPS) and the Center for Open and Distance Learning (CODL). Moreover, 2 of our staff were promoted to Dean and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Educational Studies. Dr. Ahmed Ali Didi was named Dean, Center for Postgraduate Studies (CPS), while Mr. Margret Vijay was named as Director, Center for Center for Open and Distance Learning (CODL). Furthermore, Mr. Abdul Sattar Gasim was promoted to Dean, Faculty of Educational Studies and Ms. Fathimath Saeed was promoted to Associate Dean, Faculty of Educational Studies.

 

Dr. Ahmed Ali Didi - Dean, Center for Postgraduate Studies (CPS)

Dr. Ahmed Ali Didi has worked in the educational sector for over 20years. Dr. Didi began his educational career in 1981 as an Atoll School Headmaster and thereafter worked in the Ministry of Education in various capacities.  In addition to these, he also headed the Maldives Accreditation Board (currently, Maldives Qualification Authority) from 2001 – 2002, and the Center for Continuing Education from 2008 - 2009, too, under the Ministry of Education.  

Dr. Didi completed his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision at Syracuse University, USA in 1993 and obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Educational Planning and Management in Small States from Malta University in 1997. He did his PhD from Massey University in New Zealand, in 2008, in the area of school improvement and how this is linked to leadership, change management and school culture.  

Currently, Dr. Didi is the Dean of the Centre for Post-Graduate Studies and he takes a keen interest in teaching and supervising research both at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. 

 

Mr. Abdul Sattar Gasim - Dean, Faculty of Educational Studies (FES)

Mr. Abdul Sattar Gasim is an enthusiastic person with strong academic and teaching background possessing substantial experience in managing and maintaining high standard in the academic programs. He has been working for more than 10 years in the field of education, fostering students’ critical thinking skills leading to significantly improved performance. Mr. Sattar has solid experience in managing academic research and have excellent skills in managing and leading staff and students to achieve their goals and objectives. 

Mr. Abdul Sattar Gasim is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Educational Studies.

 

Ms. Fathimath Saeed - Associate Dean, Faculty of Educational Studies (FES)

Ms. Fathimath Saeed is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Educational Studies, Villa College. She has been working with academic curricular since 2004, first as a Secondary Teacher, Leading Teacher and then as a Principal before joining the Faculty of Educational Studies in 2015. Her research interest includes teacher education and professional development, with a particular focus on self-study methodology and the role of reflective practice in developing professional knowledge about, and for, teaching and teaching future teachers.

Ms. Fathimath Saeed is currently the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Educational Studies.

 

Mr. Margret Vijay - Director, Center for Open and Distance Learning (CODL)

Mr. Margret Vijay is a proficient educator with passion and desire to transform education through innovative teaching pedagogies. He is an enduring learner who tries to broaden his horizon of knowledge in all aspects of teaching and technology. Mr. Vijay is a renowned dynamic collaborator who is always willing to take challenges to open doors for new possibilities. 

Mr. Margret Vijay is currently the Director of the Center for Open Distance Learning.

VC PAL Programme – An effective learning method

The Villa College Peer Assisted Learning programme (VC PAL) is a programme designed for students to formally engage in a peer assisted learning environment. This will benefit both the student leaders and the students in the PAL groups. Most alumni of the college state that studying is made much easier when it is carried out with their peers. Usually, the first alumni advice to all the new students is to find an effective group of peers and engage in group studies.

The VC PAL programme is intended for students to gain a better understanding of what is anticipated of you as a Villa College student. The selected peer leaders (PAL Leaders) will be students who have already scored high marks in the particular modules, who will usually be studying from the same programme, in the academic years above the students. This will enable the students who participate in this programme to gain a better understanding of the expectations in VC, especially with regard to assessment expectations and standards, and to clarify doubts about the module content. Moreover, this programme can help students to settle into college life more quickly and easily. With the understanding of the expectations in VC, the students will also be able to gain a deeper understanding of module contents and expectations. This programme is set to create a friendly and relaxed environment in which the students are given opportunities to ask questions about the course materials and college life, and to explore ideas and concepts in more depth and develop their study skills.

VC PAL programme was launched on 10th September 2019 and is introduced for 2 modules in the ongoing September 2019 semester. The modules are Understanding Business and Financial Information and Fundamentals of Accounting 2.

Letters given to staff selected for Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching

At the start of September, Villa College announced the opportunity for the full-time staff to be selected to complete the course, Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching. Higher priority was given to full-time teaching and academic staff without a teaching qualification. The main aim of this programme is to increase the quality of education given at Villa College.

On 15th September 2019, letters were awarded to the full-time staff selected to complete this programme. Session are set to be held as seminars and virtual classes. Providing training opportunities for the staff and helping them improve in their field is one of the main aims of Villa College.

Studies commence for the May 2019 semester

Studies for May 2019 semester commenced with the Welcoming and Orientation Session for May 2019.

The Rector of Villa College, Dr. Ahmed Anwar welcomed the new students and delivered a passionate and informative speech.

In this session, certificates were awarded to students who received the Villa College Scholarship for the year 2019 as well. Moreover, the Villa College Alumni Association gave a presentation about student experiences in Villa College. In addition, applications for the Villa College Student Ambassador for 2019 was launched in this session.

Furthermore, representatives from the Ministry of Higher Education provided information about the Government Free First Degree Scheme for the students.

The new semester offered the opportunity to join 102 different courses from Certificate level 1 to Master’s Degree programmes in different fields, including Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Management, Teaching, Education, Sharia, Law, Islam, Quran, Human Resource Management, Accounting, Public Health, Nursing, ACCA, Research, and Marine Studies.

Among these, there are 13 Master’s programmes, 6 Postgraduate Diploma/Certificate programmes, 21 Degree programmes, 20 Diploma programmes, 13 Certificate level 4 (Degree Foundation) programmes, 13 Certificate level 3 programmes, 2 Certificate level 2 programmes and 1 Certificate level 1 programme, as well as 8 programmes in Marine Studies.

In addition to Villa College’s own programmes, these include Master’s and Degree programmes from the prestigious university of the UK, University of the West of England.

Besides studies commencing at the QI campus in Male’, studies will be commencing at Villa College Hithadhoo campus, Villa College Naifaru campus, Villa College Addu campus, Villa College Kulhudhuffushi campus, Villa College Lakeside campus (Sh. Fonadhoo), Villa College L. Gan Campus, Villa College Guraidhoo Campus and in Villa College Mahibadhoo campus. Programmes will also commence in islands with Villa College learning centres as well, namely: HA. Hoarafhushi, R. Alifushi, R. Maakurath, B. Eydhafushi, AA. Ukulhas, ADh. Maamigili, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, N. Kendhokulhudhoo, F. Nilandhoo, HA. Dhihdhoo, B. Thulhaadhoo, Sh. Komandoo, R. Ungoofaaru, GA. Villingilli, and GDh. Gadhdhoo.

Students will be able to make payments easily in monthly instalment basis, which is being practiced since September 2017. In addition, the students have the opportunity to study all the Degree Programs offered in Villa College, through the Free First Degree Scheme by the government.

Villa College signs a MoU with Maldives Open Source Society (MOSS)

This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) sets for the terms and understanding between Maldives Open Source Society (MOSS) and Villa College (VC) to collaborate on projects and giving industry know-how to students. It also covers the roles and responsibilities of both parties that will form the basis of any joint activities undertaken as part of this collaboration. 

 

This MoU was signed by Dr. Ahmed Anwar, Rector of Villa College and Mr. Yusuf Abdulla Shunan, President of MOSS. 

Under this MoU, Villa College will collaborate with MOSS to work out ways to enhance students’ practical ICT skills and knowledge required for the industry. This includes but is not limited to guiding to the students in selecting assignments and projects that are required for the Industry, giving a chance for the students to work on practical technological requirements needed in the industry and giving exposure to the students to new technologies in the ICT Industry. MOSS will collaborate with Villa College in acquiring man-power, marketing and facilities needed for the betterment of MOSS goals.

Ms. Helen Dewar from UWE visits Villa College

The Partnership Operations Manager of University of the West of England, Ms. Helen Dewar has visited Villa College.

Ms. Helen arrived in Male’ on 17th March 2019, Sunday. The primary purpose for her visit was to discuss various matters related to teaching and administrative work. Ms. Helen met with staff of FBM & FSL to finalize the summer board dates. Moreover, meetings were held to discuss various matters related to students and teaching.

Ms. Helen also met with all the faculties conducting UWE programmes to discuss the operational plan for the Academic Year 2019/2020. This discussion enabled the joint input of UWE and Villa College in the development of timelines and identification of any points of concern.

Ms. Helen’s visit to Villa College will end on 20th March 2019. Her visit helped to ensure flawless operations in conducting UWE programmes in Villa College.
