New year resolution - 2021

New year resolution - 2021

It is the time of the year when many of us wonder about the future and reflect over the past. Let us too review our past and plan for the future.

There are many of us who wish for better salaries, promotions, bigger houses in the coming year. But let’s just think for a minute. What should we really be aspiring for? Material things, temporary happiness or something that may benefit us in the long run.

When I thought about it, I came up with 3 areas, NOT relating to the previously mentioned wishes. They are body, mind and soul. Let’s look at them separately.

Our body - it is the flesh and bones that sustain us. So, it is very important that we know what we put into our body and what we do with it. Does that mean eating fruits and vegetables? Exercising? Maybe. But another question we should ask is. Is it ‘Halal’? Did I earn the money to buy it in a good way? Did I work for it? This idea came to me as many Maldivians have such a lavish lifestyle, while many are still looking for a job to get their daily bread.

Our mind - our ability to think and reason. How do we think? What do we fill our heads with? Hatred? Bitterness? Jealousy? Competition for bigger houses; more money; everything our friends have we want more and better version of it. Let’s pause for a moment. Perhaps, you could include how we could change our thinking, - channel the positivity… reason out before making a judgement, learning to let go of pride and prejudice. Count your blessings and be thankful. Let us be mindful towards how we treat others.

Our soul. Who are we without our soul? Yes, you are right! Dead, not physically but literally. Do we know our sense of purpose in life? Do you feel that you are alive? Do you have a meaning in life? If not, let’s search for the meaning of one’s existence. The soul is also associated with spirituality and religion. How close are we to our creator? How can we have a beautiful soul? We have a decision to make. Think of ways to connect, body, mind and soul in this coming year.

Reflect on your life this new year. Let’s promise ourselves to eat healthy and halal food, count our blessings and be a bit more devoted towards our faith.
